OPAL course room of the University Library

In the OPAL course room of the University Library you will find information on our training programme, online tutorials and first aid for research problems.

Working scientifically

The module “Scientific work” introduces you to the basics and gives you tips and advice on this topic. You will learn how to work academically using materials and videos and receive information on existing face-to-face courses and counselling opportunities at the HTWD. The course is a joint module of the library, the eCampus, the Prorectorate for Teaching and Studies and the Prorectorate for Research, Sustainability and Transfer.

Information literacy

In this course, you will learn how to handle information and data in a self-determined, confident and targeted manner. You will recognise which information is really relevant to you, how to evaluate, assess and store it and how to interpret and process the information you find. The focus of the self-study course is to convey a basic understanding and knowledge of information, its origin and possible applications.

Scientific writing with Lyx

Lyx is a so-called frontend for Latex and provides tools that make writing a report, thesis or academic essay more pleasant and more focussed. This OPAL course by Prof. Dr Marco Block-Berlitz focuses on academic writing with this tool. The important elements for academic writing are presented and demonstrated in practice with numerous examples and templates. The focus is on the structure and content of theses in the natural sciences and humanities.
