As one of the main parts of the Geotechnical Engineering department, a technical laboratory has been specifically equipped for soil mechanics, rock mechanics with the capability of conducting wide range of test series on geotechnical materials. The laboratory provides all the requirement as instructional material in the basic, main and advanced educational level,  as well as practical and scientific/ research application and the test and measurement needed for third-party funded projects with a successful history.

The expert personnel and different technical apparatus have been employed to serve the customer in the following fields:

1. classification of unconsolidated and solid rocks

2. determination of the deformation and strength properties of unconsolidated and solid rock samples

3. testing of changes in the properties of unconsolidated and solid rock, in particular under frost stress

4. determination of the material properties of geosynthetics

to determine the geotechnical properties of all types of geosynthetics, the Laboratory is in a close collaboration with the Saxon Textile Research Institute of Chemnitz.

The Geotechnical Laboratory is accredited as a complete laboratory for investigations on the hydraulic and soil mechanical parameters of geosynthetics with the help of the Sächsisches Textilforschungsinstitut. As a leading inter-organizational communication example, there is also technical mutual interaction with the Centre for Applied Research and Technology (ZAFT) at the University of Applied Sciences.

Considering the broad range of facilities and experties offered by the geotechnical laboratory, the geotechnical department is open to foster the cooperation in an international level.
