Application Process |
Exchange students must be nominated by their home university and send the application documents via email to HTW Dresden. All application documents can be found in our Coming to HTW Dresden – Download section. Exchange students will receive a confirmation about the arrival of their application via email. The admission letter will be send via email to the partner university or the student. A hard copy of the admission letter will only be send if requested. The International Office will keep in touch with students via email prior to their arrival at HTW Dresden. |

Language of Instruction |
Mainly German, but we also offer courses in English (German B2 and/or English B2 necessary to follow courses). More about our English taught courses in our Course selection website. |
Language Courses |
The Language Center of HTW Dresden offers free language courses in "German as a Foreign Language (DaF)", English, French and Spanish in the winter and summer semesters. The levels of the language courses are defined on the basis of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2). More about in our Language Center website. |

General Information | |
Semester Fee | HTW Dresden does not charge any tuition, however a semester fee is charged (currently 300 EUR for summer semester 2024). This fee will be used for student services, student council and the semester ticket (German semester ticket) that allows students to use all local public transportation within Germany for free. Exchange students pay the semester fee before or upon their arrival in Germany (depending on their home country). Information via email will be send to the students before they arrive in Dresden. |
Module Selection |
The Module Catalogue can be found on Modulux. We mainly offer courses taught in German. However, the Faculty of Business Administration as well as the study programs “Environmental Engineering” (Master) and “Electrical Engineering/Elektrotechnik” (Bachelor) offer many courses taught in English. “faranto e.V.” – a student initiative to support intercultural communication at HTW Dresden |
“faranto e.V.” is a student organisation at HTW Dresden and member of the Erasmus Student Network (ESN). The organisation takes care of foreign students who are spending an exchange semester at HTW Dresden. Members of “faranto e.V.” pick up students from the train station or airport, accompany students during their first steps in Dresden as well as to various administrative offices. Accommodation |
Dresden Student Services (Studentenwerk Dresden) offers a wide range of accommodation for students. Students have to apply for accommodation via an online application procedure directly at Dresden Student Services. Attention: There is a minimum stay of 3 months! If students prefer to live in a living community, please consult Facebook groups or www.wg-gesucht.de |
Health Insurance |
All students in Germany must be covered by a health insurance. When enrolling as a student at HTW Dresden, they must provide a proof of health insurance. Students from countries within the European Union (EU)/EFTA must apply for the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) in their native country and take it to Germany. Students from countries that do not belong to the European Union (EU)/EFTA must be insured immediately by a German statutory health insurance company (e.g. AOK, TK, Barmer...) after arrival. |
Visa |
Students need to check Visa requirements/exemptions for entry into the Federal Republic of Germany before they travel to Dresden. > Students from non-EU countries are obliged to apply for a residence permit for study purposes at the Dresden Immigration Office within 3 months of entering the Federal Republic of Germany (for a stay of more than 3 months). |
