Courage to change: In his inaugural speech, Prof. Gestring outlines the future of HTWD in a dynamic university landscape
In his inaugural speech, the new rector emphasized that HTW Dresden can be proud to be part of such a strong academic landscape as Dresden: “Together we are stronger than alone, which is why I am delighted that HTW Dresden cooperates with the Fraunhofer and Leibniz institutes and the Helmholtz Center and will further strengthen these partnerships in the future.” He also referred to the well-developed higher education landscape: “Students in Dresden and the surrounding area have a wide choice of different universities and types of higher education institutions. As a university of applied sciences, HTWD is just one of these, but it is an important one. We offer something very special by combining science and research on the one hand with a strong practical focus and knowledge transfer on the other. However, I believe that the time has come to further sharpen our profile in a rapidly changing scientific landscape,” emphasizes Prof. Ingo Gestring. This also requires the courage to embrace change and respect for other opinions and perspectives. ‘Mutual trust helps us to achieve this. I would like to offer this trust,’ says the rector.
Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer wished the new rector every success in his new role: “Saxony is a state of research. Our five universities of applied sciences build bridges between industry and science every day – an essential link for creating competitive advantages with new and smart ideas and making Saxony fit for the future. HTW Dresden plays a key role in this and enjoys an excellent reputation. I am delighted that Professor Gestring has always remained closely connected to HTW Dresden and wish him every success in his new role as rector.”
Minister of Science Sebastian Gemkow highlighted the importance of the university in the region: “With its practice-oriented approach to research and teaching, HTW Dresden is of enormous importance for the training of skilled workers in the region. Professor Gestring is taking over a well-run institution and I am convinced that he will continue to develop the university successfully. An important part of this work will be to maintain and expand cooperation with companies, other research institutions, and social actors. The Ministry of Science will support the university in this endeavor. I wish Professor Gestring much strength, a steady hand in leadership, and much joy and fulfillment in his role as rector.”
